PORTLAND, OR: Local independent rock recording artist Waxie has declined an offer for a multi-year five-record deal with Sony Records, the world’s largest publisher of pop music. Additionally, after self-producing his first four albums, Waxie has refused to sell the rights of his entire existing song catalog to Sony. “Sony wanted to put my music in front of a lot of people who may not otherwise have heard it.”
Even before the release of his self-published debut album “Lovelorn Cowboy” in 2011, Waxie had begun to develop an enthusiastic following in the Portland area. His fans describe themselves as part of a tight-knit family, and they have worked hard to create something special as they support Waxie's music. Both critics and fans note that the musician’s success is extraordinary; as local Portland Independent music editor Chad Murphy notes, “Anyone who has followed Waxie knows that his talent is an unexplainable, special, and innate gift that came to him naturally. Maybe only once per generation is a musician born with this much ability—he’s truly a natural.”
Sony's goal was to license several of Waxie’s best-rated songs for use in television advertisements slated to appear in early 2027. For example, the fan-favorite track “Neverending” from his new album “Unforgiven” (Track Listing Below), was to be featured in both a soft drink marketing campaign, as well as a Superbowl ad for a new line of frozen entrees.
When asked about the decision, which would have been a radical departure from Waxie’s independent roots, the artist responded, “it wasn't the right choice at this time”.
